Fur Ball Report
Once a year, there is a huge charity event, the Fur Ball, to support the Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary, the first non-kill animal sanctuary in the state of Hawaii. Rainbow Friends is all that a sanctuary should be, except rich. Mary Rose runs the place with almost no financial cushion, and she depends upon donations to keep it going. This year's fur ball was a very swank event, at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. The date was Friday, December fourth. Kona Cat Care set up our table at the Fur Ball, showing off our brand new Kona Cat Care logo shirts! We were nearly "awwwed" to death! We received many positive comments on the cuteness, and no negative comments at all. That's always encouraging. If you wanted one, and didn't buy it, we can sell them to you from the Web site, on the "Merchandise" side tab. If you missed the Fur Ball, CLICK HERE TO SEE the poster... (new window)
Event Report
We are had a fund-raising event on Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Lanihau Shopping Center. We sold Domino's Pizza and Macy's "Shop for a Cause" tickets. We were set up near the Longs Drugs store. That location was great for us, with shade, and a bit of a wind break. However, it was not in any of the main traffic patterns. We didn't make as much as we had hoped. We may well do this again, and if we do, we'll pick a spot that is less comfortable, but which has more traffic. We still got to meet many cat lovers, and the responses from those who did go by were good.
Our Mission
We are Kona Cat Care. Our mission is to provide food, water, and medical service to Kona area cats, and to do what we can to prevent animal cruelty of all kinds.
We are very passionate about cats and their well being. Kona Cat Care associated feeders currently provide food and fresh water every night for hundreds of abandoned and feral cats in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. We provide medical care and also trap, spay/neuter, release these wonderful cats, and then manage the colonies. The cats are ear-tipped, so we are able to determine whether they have been spayed/neutered, (Girls – their right ear, Boys – their left ear). We work with Advocats, and others, to ensure the cats we feed are spayed or neutered. Sadly, many of the cats we feed are abandoned pets.
Our Future Plans
In the future, we will be expanding our current feeder assistance operations as donations increase, encouraging other groups to adopt a no-kill policy regarding animal shelters, and working against animal cruelty in new ways.
We hope we are so successful that we can assist other animal care workers, and people who have cats as pets with the spay and neutering of their pets for an affordable fee. Also, we will be starting an emergency pet food program for people who run into difficult financial times. If we can help give people in trouble the cat food they need to continue taking care of their beloved family pet, we can prevent that pet from being abandoned, that gets to the root of the abandoned and feral cat problem.
On the Big Island of Hawaii, it is hard to find housing that will let you have pets, and that causes many problems. Our hope is that if a family has to move and get rid of their cat immediately, due to unforeseen circumstances, their cat will be able to live in foster housing and the owners can visit every day. Once they move into a new home, they can pick up their beloved cat and take it home. The process of finding a new home, one that allows cats, could take a few months. It doesn't seem fair that a family and their beloved cat be separated, when all they need is a place for the cat to stay for a few months. Helping them out with a few months' worth of cat food may be all they need to be able to keep their cat.
We have many ideas, and are always open to suggestions you might have to help us help cats. We just want the best for cats and other animals. If you have any information you would like to share with us, we would love to hear from you. You can contact us via our contact page.
Thank you for taking the time to look at our Web-site. Hopefully, you will tell your friends about us.
If you chose to donate to our non-profit organization, THANK YOU SO MUCH ! If you were not in a position to donate today, we understand, maybe you will be able to in the future, or maybe just by you telling one of your friends, they may be able to help.
We hope you stop by again and we wish you all the best.

Why all the fuss about cats?
The easiest way to describe it is to list some features of a local cat population that is healthy and not lacking in food.
- Cats form a part of the local ecosystem.
- Cats greatly reduce local rodent populations.
- Cats greatly reduce other local vermin.
- With fewer vermin, residents and business owners will use less poison to control vermin.
- Less poison in the environment will reduce unwanted kills of owls, hawks, and pets.
- Kitties are just so darned cute!
